Kyoko Mori, author of YARN: REMEMBERING THE WAY HOME

Start: Fri, 03/19/2010 - 7:00pm

End: Fri, 03/19/2010 - 7:00pm

As steadily and quietly as her marriage falls apart, so Kyoko Mori’s understanding of knitting deepens. Interspersed with fact and history about knitting throughout, it is a touching narrative that contemplates the nature of love, loss and what holds a marriage together. Mori examines yarn as a subject to understand human nature - when to unravel, when to begin again, when to drop the stitch, and when to declare it finished.

Kyoko Mori has published a book of essays, a memoir, and three novels. Her essays and short stories have appeared in journals such as The Missouri Review, Harvard Review, and The Kenyon Review. A professor in the MFA creative writing program at George Mason University Mori holds a Ph.D. in English/Creative Writing from UWM.

A Special Book Club Evening with Daniel Goldin and Valerie Laken, author of DREAM HOUSE

Start: Wed, 03/24/2010 - 7:00pm

End: Wed, 03/24/2010 - 7:00pm

Boswell proprietor Daniel Goldin regularly speaks to groups around Milwaukee about great books for book clubs, and on this night will make his first in-store presentation, complete with recommendations, give-aways, and his top reading choice for 2010 book clubs. He will be joined by special guest Valerie Laken, author of the novel DREAM HOUSE (now out in paperback!), who will give a short reading and Q&A session.

DREAM HOUSE asks the question, “What price will people pay to hold their homes and dreams together?” When Kate and Stuart Kinzler buy a run-down historic house in Ann Arbor, Michigan, they're hoping their grand renovation project can rescue their troubled marriage. Instead, they discover that years ago their home was the scene of a terrible crime—and the revelation tips the balance of their precarious union. When a mysterious man begins lurking around her yard, Kate, now alone, is forced to confront her home's dangerous past. Hers is not the only life that has crumbled under this roof. This man's family also disintegrated here, as the result of one brief act of rage that may haunt him—and this house—for years to come.

Lisa Lutz, author of THE SPELLMANS STRIKE AGAIN

Start: Thu, 03/25/2010 - 7:00pm

End: Thu, 03/25/2010 - 7:00pm

At Spellman headquarters, it's business as unusual. Doorknobs and light fixtures are disappearing every day, Mom's been spotted crying in the pantry, and a series of increasingly demanding Spellman Rules (Rule #27: No Speaking Today) can't quite hold the family together. This final installment in the bestselling, award-nominated series is hands-down the most hilarious, thrilling, and moving one yet. And it proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Isabel Spellman, no matter how much she matures, will never be able to follow Rule #1: Act Normal.

Lisa Lutz is the author of The Spellman Files, Curse of the Spellmans, a national best-seller and nominee for the 2008 Edgar® Award for Best Novel, and most recently Revenge of the Spellmans. A motion picture adaptation of The Spellman Files is in development with Paramount Pictures.

Christopher Moore, author of BITE ME!

Start: Wed, 03/31/2010 - 7:00pm

End: Wed, 03/31/2010 - 7:00pm

The sequel to Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck, Bite Me brings together our favorite recurring characters - Jody & Tommy, Abby von Normal & Foo Dog, gay cops Cavuto & Rivera, the Emperor of San Francisco & his “men” - to save San Francisco (yet again!) from the evils of the undead. In this wacky tale, Christopher Moore brings us a herd of vampire cats, a ninja assassin and even a reference to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

The “Author Guy” has written eleven side-splittingly funny novels, including the best-selling Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal. More notably, he has worked as a roofer, a grocery clerk, a hotel night auditor, and insurance broker, a waiter, a photographer, and a rock and roll DJ. Did we mention he’s hilarious?
